3 Best Guitars With Jumbo Frets – My Favorites
Best Budget – Jackson JS22 Dinky

What I like
- Compound radius fretboard at a really affordable price
- Great quality hardware
- Comfortable and fast playing
- Surprisingly versatile
- Mean distorted tones
- Great all-around quality
What I don’t like
- Sometimes flaws in the finish
- If you hate metal, this axe is not the best option for you
Who is it for?
If you are after a cheap electric guitar that is fast playing, can handle metal, and possesses a nice amount of versatility too, Jackson JS22 Dinky is a really good option. Also, JS22 Dinky is really upgradeable, hit it with a pair of Seymor Duncan’s and you got a premium-sounding guitar in your hands.

Best Overall – Ibanez Genesis Collection RG550
Bridge: Edge Locking Tremolo bridge
What I like
- Super-versatile pickups (HSH)
- Smooth & slim Super Wizard neck shape (great shape for small hands)
- Great quality Gotoh tuners
- Smooth to use and durable Ibanez Edge tremolo bridge
- Excellent playability
What I don’t like
- Coil-split would be just awesome
Who is it for?
If you are after extreme versatility, comfortable playability, and great value for the money, Ibanez Genesis Collection RG550 is one of the best options. It’s an all-around work-horse that will serve you well and faithfully in every situation. Plus it features an Ibanez Edge bridge. Some people swear by the name of it and prefer it over Original Floyd Rose.

Best Premium – Ibanez Prestige AZS2200
What I like
- Extremely smooth and comfortable playability
- Spot-on sound
- Surprisingly versatile
- Alter switch enables connecting single-coil pickup and another coil of the humbucker in series to create different humbucker-like tones
- Great hardware (Gotoh Locking tuners, Gotoh tremolo bridge, and bone nut)
- Could cost a lot more
What I don’t like
- Premium quality means a premium price
Who is it for?
I don’t like to call myself a fanboy. But if I had to choose just 1 brand to be a fanboy of, it would be Ibanez. And this AZ Prestige is a great one. It features
- Seymour Duncan Magic Touch-mini Humbucker
- Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Custom Single-coil
- Gotoh F1802 Tremolo Bridge
- 2-way mini alter switch & 5-way blade pickup switch
- Gotoh Magnum Locking tuners
- Stunning looks
- Smooth playability
And still, it costs under 2k. The money you have to throw in order to get this Ibanez is still a big chunk, I know, but still, the value for the money is outstanding. The best premium and pro-level electric guitar with Jumbo frets to me.

FAQ
Are Jumbo Frets Good?
Jumbo frets are a really popular fret size and a great choice for some players. They can make playing effortless since you don’t have to press the strings heavily. But of course, Jumbo frets are not perfect… have look at the Pros and Cons below:
Pros and Cons of Jumbo Frets
Pros
- Can make playing effortless with the right setup
- You don’t have to press strings hard in order to fret a note
- Ease of fretting a note can allow you to increase your playing speed
- If frets wear out, large frets are easier to level
Cons
- If you got a heavy playing style, you can press your notes sharp with large frets
- Poor quality Jumbo frets scratch really easily
- You don’t feel the fretboard that much
Who Should Buy Guitar With Jumbo Frets?
If you don’t want to press the strings heavily, you don’t mind the fact that you are not touching the fretboard much with Jumbo frets, and want to achieve effortless playability, Jumbo frets can be a great choice.
Are Jumbo Frets Good for Beginners?
Jumbo frets can work well for beginners. When I started out, and still to this day, I want to feel the fretboard wood of the guitar with my tiny fingers, so Jumbo frets are not my go-to choice. But I do enjoy playing an axe with jumbo frets, and they for sure can work for beginners. I recommend weighing the Pros and Cons above and doing some testing if possible.
Do Jumbo Frets Make Guitar Easier to Play?
Jumbo frets don’t require much effort from the player when fretting notes. This can make Jumbo frets easier and more effortless to play. Some players who play fast stuff prefer guitars with Jumbo frets.
But some players are like me, and they want to feel the fretboard when playing. If this is the case, Jumbo frets are most likely not the best choice.
Jumbo Frets Size mm
The size of Jumbo frets can vary between different manufacturers, but the general size of Jumbo fret wire is 2.9mm (0.110”) wide and 1.3mm (.055”) tall.
