Well, you want to get the best of both worlds? Bright single-coil tones and warm humbucker sound. Personally, if I had to pick just 1 guitar and stick with it, it would have both, single-coil and humbucker.

And you are in a luck! I gathered the best guitars featuring single-coil and humbucker pickups out there into this article. I also reveal my 3 favorites based on my experience and research. And if you have any questions, check the FAQ section or leave a comment.

I first grabbed the guitar in 2009. I started this website in January 2020 because I couldn’t do window installation anymore due to my health problems. I love guitars and have played dozens and dozens of different guitars through different amps and pedals over the years, and also, building a website interested me, so I decided to just go for it! I got lucky and managed to get awesome people to help me with my website.

I also got lucky because I have you visiting my website right now. Thank you. I do all this for you guys. If you have any recommendations, tips, or feedback, just leave a comment, I would love to chat with you. I have also been fortunate to produce content for several large guitar websites, such as SongsterrMusicnotesGuitarGuitar, and Ultimate Guitar.

I spend my spare time exercising and hanging out with my wife and crazy dog (I guess that went the right way…).

Single-Coils and Humbuckers

I included guitars with both regular and P90 single coils (plus a couple of other types). P90 is just a single coil pickup with more wounds of wire around the coil and it produces a thicker sound because of that. Here’s how regular single coils look versus P90s:

1. Regular Single Coil pickups. 2. P90 Single Coil.

I included guitars with different types of humbuckers too. Buckers with covering and without, mini-humbuckers, and lipstick humbuckers. Regular humbuckers sound warmer and thicker than mini-, and lipstick humbuckers.

Humbuckers without cover and with cover. The cover can make the sound a little bit less bright.

Humbucker vs Single Coil pickup, what’s the deal?

32 Guitars With Single Coil And Humbucker

Reverend has several guitars with P90 single-coil and humbucker in their selection. For example this Double Agent W.

Let’s start with the full list of the top-notch guitars with Single-Coil and Humbucker. I only included guitars with 2 pickups, so no guitars with HSS or HSH pickup configuration can be found here. After the list, we’ll move to my favorites and FAQ section.

3 Best Guitars With Single Coil And Humbucker – My Favorites

Best Budget – Gretsch G2215-P90 Streamliner Junior Jet Club

What I like

  • Beautiful, smooth looks
  • Body style fits me well (surprisingly slim feel)
  • Both pickups offer nice tones for classic rock, blues etc.
  • Good quality hardware
  • Fun to play

What I don’t like

  • You can get smoother and easier playability for the same money (Ibanez & Jackson for example)
  • Not a metal machine
  • Sometimes out of the box finish issues

Who is it for?

Excellent classic rock guitar for the money. It looks just so beautiful and is fun to play. Sometimes finish issues can happen though, for example small scratches, rough fret edges, etc. But for the money, it’s a great guitar. And its Broad’Tron P90 Single-coil and 2S Humbucker offer really nice tones, especially for rock, classic rock, and blues. Best budget option with single-coil and humbucker.

Best Overall – Yamaha PAC611HFM Pacifica

What I like

  • Coil-split adds versatility
  • Really comfortable playability
  • Amazing bang for the buck (Graph Tech TUSQ nut, Seymor Duncan pups, etc.)
  • Great all-around quality
  • Stay in tune extremely well (Grover Locking tuners)

What I don’t like

  • I would wish Yamaha manufactured Pacifica’s with regular single-coil and humbucker too
  • Some rare finish issues out of the box

Who is it for?

One of my favorite mid-range electric guitars. Offers better hardware and pickups than many hundreds of dollars more expensive guitars, and oh boy, these Seymor Duncan’s (SP90 & TB-14) sound awesome. I’m not exaggerating. This guitar sounds good. There are no options with regular single-coil and humbucker available, which is a bummer, but even with P90 and humbucker, this Pacifica is one of my absolute favorite guitars. The best overall of this article with flying grades.

Best Premium – Ibanez Prestige AZS2209H

What I like

  • Extremely smooth and comfortable playability
  • Spot-on sound
  • Surprisingly versatile
  • Alter switch enables connecting single-coil pickup and another coil of the humbucker in series to create different humbucker-like tones
  • Great hardware (Gotoh Locking tuners, Gotoh bridge, and bone nut)
  • Could cost a lot more

What I don’t like

  • Premium quality means a premium price

Who is it for?

I don’t like to call myself a fanboy. But if I had to choose just 1 brand to be a fanboy of, it would be Ibanez. And this AZ Prestige is a great one. It features

  • Seymour Duncan Magic Touch-mini Humbucker
  • Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Custom Single-coil
  • Gotoh F1803 Tremolo Bridge
  • 2-way mini alter switch & 3-way blade pickup switch
  • Gotoh Magnum Locking tuners
  • Beautiful ash body (body wood doesn’t affect the tone of electric guitar when played through an amp)
  • Smooth playability

And still, it costs under 2k. The money you have to throw in order to get this Ibanez is still a big chunk, I know, but still, the value for the money is outstanding. The best premium and pro-level guitar with single-coil and humbucker.

FAQ

Can You Have A Single Coil And A Humbucker on The Same Guitar?

Of course, you can! You can find many normal electric guitars, or even hollow body electric guitars featuring both, single-coil and humbucker.

Who Should Get A Guitar With Single-Coil and Humbucker?

If you like the sound of both and feel like you want both on your guitar. The versatility is one massive benefit that you get when having both. You have a ton of different tone options in your arsenal.

What Music A Guitar With Single-Coil and Humbucker Can Handle?

First. A guitar like this is really versatile. Of course, it depends a little on the exact pickup models and types, but a guitar featuring both single-coil and humbucker can usually handle the following like a breeze:

  • Rock
  • Blues
  • Jazz
  • Funk
  • Country
  • Hard Rock
  • Some metal

Note that I said “usually”. That’s exactly what I mean. There are some guitars with HS configuration that are made for metal (ESP E-II Alexi Ripped for example), and they will handle mean tones extremely well, but usually most HS axes are not my top choices for metal. But still, when having both pickup types in one guitar, you unlock a ton of versatility and tone options. Personally, I like that. A lot.

Conclusion

I literally like the sound of almost every pickup option out there. No matter if it’s P90s, single-coils, humbuckers, mini-humbuckers, etc. All those have their place. Some handle metal, some jazz, some blues, and some country. We guitar players are spoiled with awesome options.

I hope that this post helped you out, and maybe you even decided to get one of the guitars featured. If you have any questions, leave a comment, I and the GND team are here for you.

I wish you all the best and keep rocking!
